On that balmy summers night in August 2003 , I vividly remember Rob’s words to the 125,000 adoring fans gathered at Knebworth….
‘’I going to get old, and I’m getting older and I want you to come with me. You’ve watched me grow up so far….I want to get old with you lot, please please don’t leave me….
This week, as Rob releases his DVD ’And Through It All’, we are presented with a fantastic collection of Rob’s live performances from 1997 - 2006. The DVD highlights to us all what a world class performer Robbie is and why he has filled our lives with such passionate memories of the times we have seen him perform live over the years. He really is a born entertainer.
It celebrates Rob in his 10th year as a solo recording artist, 10 years of us watching him grow up and never leaving him.
As Rob nears the end of his 2006 world tour, we can’t all help but wonder what the next chapter in ’Growing old with Robbie’ will be.
Entertaining 3 million fans across the world on a tour spanning 10 months has been an exhausting feat for Rob and one that he hasn’t enjoyed 100% of the time. Whether we ever see Rob undertake a tour of such magnitude again remains to be seen. He will almost certainly be entertaining live us again in some way, shape, or form because performing is in his veins and I don’t believe he could live without it.
As new and younger artists appear, they all seem to be the flavour of the moment, with their number one hits and consistent success as front runners for the annual music awards that are handed out. I warmly congratulate them all for their hard work and efforts and am genuinely pleased for them with the rewards they receive.
But at this stage in his life Rob doesn’t HAVE to be achieving all of those accolades for his fans to still stay with him and continue to grow old with him. Ok, Rob’s record company will have them on their wish list, but to us we are not fickle enough to even think that they really matter.
As he experiments with his material, attracting yet more criticism from the press, we are still all growing old with Rob. After 10 amazing years he should be allowed to write the album he has always dreamed of writing. ‘Rudebox‘, love it or hate it, is a work of art containing tracks where we are allowed into the personal world of Robert Williams. How he feels, what he thinks, how his life has really been. ‘Rudebox’ has become part of the process of growing old with Rob and I am pleased that he has taken me there as part of the musical journey through his life.
So where will Rob be in 10 years from now? Does he even know? Has he reached the peak of his career or is it still to come? What else does he professionally want and need to achieve?
I read a comment written about Rob’s fans during the UK leg of his tour describing us as an ’ageing audience’.
Quite how Rob is supposed to have spent 10 years of his career with fans who do not actually get any older during that time is beyond me! We are getting old with Rob!
The actual truth is that Rob has fans of all ages. Here on Pure Robbie for example we have members who are 12 years old and members who are in their 60's. My 5 year old insists on Rudebox being played non stop in the car on the way to school.
Last weekend I went to see Bruce Springsteen at Wembley Arena. He was amazing. Bruce is 57 years old and has been recording for 34 years. He has had a career where he has been enormously successful selling millions of albums and filling stadiums for his live performances.
These days he competes with all the new and younger artists for the number one spots and awards. But he doesn’t need to since he is already a legend with nothing to prove, selling out every concert he plays within minutes.
At the concert last week there were fans who have grown old with him who were well into their 60’s. There were fans who had followed since their teenage years in their 30’s and 40’s. And there was a 12 year girl on the front row of the front pen. Bruce just got up on the stage, no big fancy set, no support, and performed non stop for 2 ½ hours.
It made me think I so hope that Rob will still be recording and performing just like this when he is 57 years old. He too will have fans in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and so on. Like Bruce, he doesn’t need the awards. And because he doesn’t always get to number one doesn’t mean he is not a legend and admired by millions.
We will all have grown old with Rob.
So a message to Rob from all your fans ……’We are going to get old, and are getting older and we want you to stay with us. We’ve watched you grow up so far….we want to get old with you, please please don’t leave us….
